If you are at least 20 years of age and are interested in becoming a police officer, the Town of Elon Police Department invites you to apply for the Police Trainee Program.

Police Trainee Duties

The primary duty of the Police Trainee is to successfully complete Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) to meet the requirements of a sworn law enforcement officer. 

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief of Police / B.L.E.T. Director and is evaluated in terms of performance in classwork, practical situations, firearms proficiency, driving ability, and physical fitness. 

Police Trainee Eligibility Requirement

• Police Trainees must be 20 years of age at date of appointment

• Must be a U.S. citizen

• Vision must be correctable to 20/20

• Pass Physical Abilities Test 

• Must be a high school graduate or possess a valid G.E.D. certificate recognized by the State of North Carolina

• Possess a valid operator's license

• Illegal drug use will be scrutinized with respect to recent use, type of drug and frequency of use

• Have never committed, been involved in or convicted of a felony or a serious misdemeanor

• Be of good character and reputation

• Have the ability to perform essential job functions with or without a reasonable accommodation

• Police Trainee must have the ability to obtain certification as a Police Officer through the Criminal Justice Education and Standards Commission of North Carolina within six months of the hiring date. 

Police Trainee Salary 

• The salary for a police Trainee is $33,930.21 and will adjust to $37,700.23 after successful completion of Basic Law Enforcement training

Tuition Reimbursement 

• Trainees pursuing a college education may be eligible for the town’s tuition reimbursement program when released from probationary period.

• Initial Applicant Screening 

• Panel Interview

• Psychological exam

• Physical abilities test

• Background interview

• Medical exam

• Entire background investigation

Special Requirements

Subsequent to a conditional job offer, applicants must:

• Pass a comprehensive medical exam, including drug testing and vision standard.

• The Trainee must be willing to sign a Condition of Employment Agreement acknowledging the requirement of 3 years of service.
