STARTING SALARY RANGE:  $48,116.09 to $60,145.14 depending on qualifications

The Town of Elon is accepting applications for the position of Town Planner. Elon is an active community with a population of 10,532 which includes Elon University. 

This position will plan and oversee the town’s municipal and extraterritorial jurisdiction planning functions and perform administrative and compliance duties related to land use planning, code enforcement, community development, and storm water compliance. While serving as the Land Development Ordinance (LDO) Administrator, this position coordinates the Technical Review Committee (TRC) and reviews subdivision and other development plans with town staff, county officials, university representatives, developers, engineers, and lawyers to ensure conformity with the LDO, recognized planning principles, land-use practices, and storm water requirements.

The successful candidate will exercise discretionary technical judgment pertaining to urban design, planning, and code regulations; communicate effectively with residents, community groups, elected officials, the Planning Board, and staff; build and maintain partnerships with community, local, regional, inter-governmental, and university stakeholders; collaborate across departments to achieve organizational goals; use sound planning and land use management  techniques; and manage the town Regional Geographic Information System (ReGIS) Agreement. This position is non-supervisory and reports to the Town Manager. The Town plans to establish a comprehensive land use plan and update the Land Development Ordinance.


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, engineering, or other related field; a Master’s degree is preferred with at least three to five years of professional level experience in urban planning preferably with a N.C. government entity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties. Possession or ability to obtain AICP certification within one year is preferred.
